Bijan Bar & Restaurant (Kuala Lumpur)

For our third and final day in Malaysia, we went to a nearby city called Putrajaya. Putrajaya is a green city where Malaysian government employees and their families reside. It is a beautiful city with lots of land, parks, and interesting looking buildings. After taking a 1.5 hour train ride back to Kuala Lumpur, we went to Bijan for dinner. Bijan is a high class restaurant serving traditional Malaysian food. It was named the best restaurant in Malaysia back in 2005. It is in a secluded location with lush surrounding foliage. The décor is tropical, with woods and trees in the patio.

We ordered the Popiah Goreng as a starter. It is fried crispy golden spring rolls stuffed with vegetables and served with a chilli sauce. It is very crispy, but it tastes just like any other spring roll and so it did not leave much of an impression on us.

One of our main dishes is the Rendang Daging which is dry beef curry cooked in an aromatic infusion of spices over a slow fire for several hours. Another main dish is Masak Lemak Ayam dengan Nangka which is chicken pieces simmered in coconut curry. We also ordered two bowls of Nasi Lemak to go with the curry sauce. The dry beef curry has an extremely strong and rich taste with lots of spices in the sauce. One minus point is that the beef is a little bit rough. The chicken curry is the better of the two dishes. The curry has a creamy taste because it is cooked with coconut juice. It is just like the curry chicken that I cook at home. However, it is served with some type of water chestnut which is very stiff and hard to chew on. It would have been a much better choice if they choose potato to go with the curry chicken instead.

To finish our meal, we ordered a Tapioca dessert with chocolate fudge and agar agar, which is a Malaysian classic. This is a very unique dessert. The little bits of tapioca are strongly packed together and made into a cake. Another dessert that we got is the coconut flan. It tastes like a regular flan but with a very rich coconut taste. I guess the Malaysians really love coconut.
