新峰肉骨茶 (Kuala Lumpur)

After three days of fun in Singapore with my family, my husband and I continued our journey to nearby Kuala Lumpur which only requires a 1-hour flight. We arrived in Kuala Lumpur at around noon time. The city is much older and less clean than Singapore. It also seems not as safe, because we see signs of “Beware of purse snatcher” on the street of our hotel. The hotel is a nice four star but it seems like the neighborhood is a little sketchy. Kuala Lumpur is also hotter than Singapore. Although it is already late October, the temperature is at least 33 degrees Celsius or 92 degrees Fahrenheit. It is so hot that we tried to roll up our jeans.

Since we arrived at around noon time, our first mission is to fill our stomachs. We went to 新峰肉骨茶, a famous place serving pork rib soup, which is within walking distance of our hotel. Its style is similar to 大排檔 where tables are out in the open with plastic chairs. There is not much décor, but their food is pretty cheap.

For drinks, we got the 竹庶矛根 which is very refreshing in the hot weather. We also ordered 油條 (Chinese style fried bread stick) for appetizer. This dish is served in two different styles, one is 油條 simmered in herbal soup which made it very soft and moist and the other is 油條 cut in sections served on a plate which is too hard.

The highlight of the lunch is of course their famous pork rib soup which is 福建式 with lots of herbs. I love the taste of the herbal soup which is rich and strong. I can tell that the soup has been cooked for many hours. The pork ribs and slices of pork are also quite tender with some fat. The soup tastes a lot like the herbal chicken soup that my father-in-law makes all the time. After trying both 潮州式 (pepper style) and 福建式 (herbal style), I definitely like the herbal taste much better. I guess I prefer food that has rich and strong taste.
