逸群雞飯 (Singapore)

After meeting up with my family in Singapore, we went to 逸群雞飯 which is two blocks from their hotel for lunch. This restaurant specializes in 海南雞飯 (Hainanese Chicken Rice). It was opened more than 60 years ago, and it is still keeping the original settings and décor. Everything is extremely simple and old, including the table settings and utensils. There are about nine tables in this small restaurant.

We ordered a half Hainanese Chicken, five bowls of 雞油飯 (chicken oil rice), and some vegetables. The Hainanese Chicken is very tender and juicy, even the pieces of chicken breast are very soft. The chicken oil rice is filled with aroma of the chicken oil. The only minus point is that the rice is slightly undercooked with not enough water added. The sauce is very authentic, with 黑醬油 (it is a thick and dark soy sauce, unlike the usual ones), minced ginger, and 酸辣辣椒醬 (sour and spicy chili paste). The sauce is a very nice pairing with the tender pieces of chicken. Although this is already our third meal of that day, we enjoyed the chicken so much that we wished we had ordered more.

After finishing this satisfactory meal, I can understand why 蔡瀾 recommends this restaurant in his book.
