正斗粥麵專家 (Hong Kong)

My family and I always go to 正斗粥麵專家 for some comfort food. Last time when I was in Hong Kong, I got very sick with the flu and ended up eating at 正斗 for three meals in a row. This time around, 正斗 is once again our first stop in Hong Kong.

正斗 is known for their small wonton soup in which people refer to it as 細蓉. The noodles are made from duck eggs. They are pretty thin and slightly chewy. Unlike some other places, there is no strange taste in the noodles at all. The wontons contain big pieces of shrimp that are very bouncy. The wonton wrap is very thin, soft, and smooth. I am usually not a big fan of noodles, but I love this one.

Besides noodles, they also serve excellent congee. We love to order the beef congee, because the congee is so soft with the rice mushed up. The beef is extremely tender.

My husband likes to order 干沙牛河 (beef chow fun). The cut of the beef is from the rump of the cow. With special marinating techniques, they made the beef so incredibly tender. The portion of the beef is also generous. This dish is not oily at all because it is briefly cooked in very strong fire.

When we were in Hong Kong in the spring of this year, we tried the 窩蛋牛飯 which was equally good.

The favorite dish that I order every single time at 正斗 is 蝦腸 (rice noodle wrap with shrimps). The rice noodle wrap is very thin, and the shrimps are gigantic. The shrimps are very bouncy which makes every bite enjoyable. We have already tried their 牛腸 which is also tasty with very tender beef and thin rice noodle wrap. However, the 蝦腸 is too good, and so it will always be my first choice.

For dessert, we have tried the 千層糕 (thousand layered cake). It takes 15 minutes to make and is freshly steamed. It is served hot and is very soft.
