炭火焼肉 秘苑 (Tokyo)

After a day of shopping at 秋葉原, we went to 秘苑 for Japanese style BBQ. They are famous for their barbequed fatty beef on a charcoal grill. We went to this restaurant when we went to Japan more than a year ago and would like to get an encore. It is hard to miss this restaurant because of a big red sign advertising BBQ served on a charcoal grill.

We remembered that the ultimate premium kalbi was so delicious that we ordered a second round, so we wanted to get it again but unfortunately they did not have it. So, we decided to order another type of extreme premium beef that they have for the night, which surely did not disappoint us. The beef is thinner than the ultimate premium kalbi but it is pretty wide. The proportion of meat and fat is perfect. The fatty beef is marinated in a sweet soy sauce. After cooking on the charcoal grill, the beef is so smooth that it takes no effort at all to chew on it. The fattiness of the beef makes the whole piece very oily, and so after a few pieces we felt like we have had enough. Besides the quality of the beef, the marinade is perfect because it gives the beef a strong and rich soy sauce taste.

We also placed an order of the premium kalbi to fill our stomachs. Although it is called premium grade, it is far less tasty than the extreme premium beef. It is much rougher with less fat content and harder to chew on.

All in all, we would give this restaurant two thumbs up. When we went to Hong Kong later on and were able to make a comparison between the beef, the beef from Japan is far superior to those you can get elsewhere.
