On our second day in Kuala Lumpur, we visited the most famous Petronas Twin Towers. It is an amazing tall building with a sky bridge that links the two towers on the 41st and 42nd floors. After taking tons of pictures with the Petronas Twin Towers, we went inside of the Suria KLCC for lunch. We visited Madam Kwan’s which is a high-end café that serves traditional Malaysia cuisine. Its décor is sleek and modern. The environment is clean and bright.
We ordered a hot and a cold 拉茶(Teh Tarik). It literally means pulled tea which is made from black tea and condensed milk. The Teh Tarik is smooth and not too sweet. With the hot weather, the cold Teh Tarik is a better choice.
For appetizer, we ordered the Otak Otak. This dish is fish paste mixed with spices including chili, garlic, shallots, lemon grass, and coconut milk, which is then wrapped in a banana leaf and softened by steaming. It tastes like meatball that is incredibly moist.
Madam Kwan’s is famous for their 椰漿飯 (Nasi Lemak) which is a popular Nyonya dish. Nyonya is a blend of Chinese and Malay food. The Nasi Lemak is served in a big portion. What does the name Nasi Lemak mean? It means white lemak rice cooked in coconut milk. Each grain of rice is distinguishable and is not mushy or sticky. I was expecting a strong and sweet coconut taste in the rice, but this was not the case. There is only a very slight coconut taste and the rice is not moist enough. I would prefer rice that is more moist with a stronger coconut taste. The Nasi Lemak is served with two pieces of curry chicken, a hard boiled egg, dried shrimp floss, dried anchovies, and cucumber. I like the taste of curry but the chicken is not tender enough. Since the curry has such a strong flavor and dominates the dish, it is almost like eating curry chicken rice.
