海外天海鮮酒家 (Kuala Lumpur)

After half a day of sightseeing in Kuala Lumpur, my husband and I are so tired because of the hot weather. We went back to our hotel for some rest and to relax. After resting for about two hours, we went to 海外天海鮮酒家 for dinner which is a 10-15 minutes walk from our hotel. This is a highly rated restaurant that is recommended by a magazine. Let me tell you, this restaurant far exceeded our expectations.

When we arrived, the restaurant was already filled with lots of patrons. We got one of the few tables that were still open. The décor is like a typical seafood restaurant, with lots of tables and big seafood tanks that contain fresh fish. Besides seafood, this restaurant is also famous for their 燒臘.

For appetizers, we got the crab roe shark fin soup because it is one of my husband’s favorites. The soup contains clusters of shark fin and lots of crab meat. There are also bits of crab roe on top. I am usually not a big fan of shark fin soup, but this one is so tasty that I could not stop eating it. The soup base is rich yet not too heavy. The freshness of the crab meat and creaminess of the crab roe made the soup flavorful. The price is not expensive at all. In fact, with the generous portion of crab meat and shark fin, I think it is a bargain.

Even the vegetables that we ordered are delicious. It is Kang Kong (morning glory) tossed with XO sauce and a spicy chili and shrimp paste that gives it a kick. I love the texture of Kang Kong because it is hollow inside and is not soggy at all. This dish is a little spicy, but it is very flavorful with the rich aroma of the chili and shrimp paste.

We asked the waitress for recommendations, and she suggested us to order the 蟹粉豆腐 (crab roe tofu) which is a popular dish served with home-made tofu. Judging by the looks, we thought that the tofu must be very hard with thick skin on the outside. We were so wrong. Once again, this proves that appearance can be very deceiving. After the first bite, we were hooked. The skin is very light and the tofu inside is extremely soft. It requires no effort to chew or bite at all. The crab roe sauce is wonderful because it is creamy and rich yet not too salty. This dish is perfect for eating with a bowl of rice.

The main dish of the night is steamed bamboo fish served with soy sauce and cooked oil. This cooking style is very popular in Chinese home cooked meals. In my opinion, this is the best way to cook fish because it allows the freshness of the fish to come through. The fish is so extremely tender, soft, and juicy. I have never tasted fish that is so soft. It is cooked just right, not a second less and a second more. There are not many bones in it at all. I especially love some of the pieces near the fish belly which is attached to some fat. The fish skin is also very smooth and matches well with the fish flesh. I am a fish lover and found myself cleaning up the whole dish.

We were extremely satisfied with the meal. Although we were very full, we still wanted more so we ordered dessert. We did not have high hopes for the dessert because the shark fin soup, vegetables, homemade tofu, and bamboo fish were too perfect. They only have two different kinds of dessert, one of which is the coconut pudding served in a coconut shell. Even the dessert is so satisfactory. The pudding is very soft, smooth, and refreshing. The taste of coconut is filled throughout the pudding. It is like eating from a coconut, only much softer.

We give this restaurant four thumbs up. It is the best Chinese style seafood restaurant that we have ever visited.
